Building a Multi-Currency Payment Engine
The Challenge
PayWave Asia needed a payment gateway that could handle multi-currency transactions across Southeast Asia while meeting the compliance requirements of eight different regulatory frameworks.

We engineered a high-availability payment gateway with a built-in compliance engine that automatically applies the correct regulatory rules based on transaction origin and destination. The system supports eight currencies with real-time conversion.
PayWave Asia was founded to simplify cross-border payments in Southeast Asia. The challenge: every country in the region has its own regulatory framework, currency, and payment infrastructure. Building a gateway that handles all of this while maintaining sub-second transaction times required deep technical expertise.
We assembled a team with fintech experience across Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The architecture uses event-driven microservices — each regulatory compliance engine runs independently, so adding a new country doesn't require modifying existing transaction flows.
The multi-currency engine handles real-time conversion with rate locking at transaction initiation, preventing the slippage that plagues many cross-border payment systems. We built a custom reconciliation system that matches transactions across multiple banking partners within minutes, not days.
Since launch, the platform has processed over $45M per month with 99.97% uptime. PayWave Asia has expanded from their initial three markets to eight, with each new market integration taking weeks instead of months thanks to the modular compliance architecture.
